Is your merchandise sweatshop-free?
All our merchandise comes from worker-owned sources (like Fair Trade, but Fair Trade is a copyrighted name, so we can't actually call our products Fair Trade). Once in a while our suppliers will switch vendors to non-worker-owned or otherwise controversial manufacturers, but then we leave them immediately and look for different suppliers.
Where do your proceeds go?
Proceeds from merchandise sales are treated as donations. Manufacturing costs are around 25% of the cost of the item. Donated funds to the Save Darfur Coalition help the people of Darfur by supporting the advocacy and lobbying work of the Coalition and our supporters. No more than 4.5% will be used for financial administration, and no more than 5% will be used for the direct management expenses of the Save Darfur Coalition. While donations to relief organizations are extremely helpful in the short-term, utilizing funds to pressure the government is of primary importance. The Save Darfur Coalition asks for immediate action to address the humanitarian and protection issues. Individual donations to on-the-ground organizations do make changes in Darfur, but the United States government allocates billions of dollars in foreign aid per year. If the US administration realizes the importance of ending the genocide in Darfur, significantly more money will go towards projects such as fresh water access, irrigation programs, etc. Furthermore, only the US government and the international community have the power to protect civilians.
The Save Darfur Coalition has four major goals which it asks the United States government to address:
1) Guarantee the safety of the civilians
of Darfur and humanitarian aid workers.
2) Provide humanitarian relief for the three
million conflict-affected persons.
3) Create a system in which perpetrators
will be held accountable for the atrocities
they commit.
4) Ensure the safe, dignified and voluntary
return of people to their homes.
